Lessons of Greatness: You have to take the Initiative

I’m a big fan of audio essays, especially ones like this from Mike Maples of Floodgate where the emotion and passion shines through in the writer/readers voice. Makes it much more memorable (for me at least).

The new economics of higher education

The decisions of American families also will choke off out-of-state tuition revenue. Note that about three-quarters of America’s higher education sector, by enrollment, is state schools. The out-of-state tuition rate is the real cash cow of American higher education, and sometimes it can approach three times the in-state rate. Schools’ reliance on out-of-state revenue is going to take a big hit, as it was premised on a degree of individual geographic mobility that simply does not exist right now and may not be restored anytime soon.

Scale and Loyalty (Gavin Baker)

An alternate title for this could be The Grand Unified Theory of Internet Economics (Or, why the same laws govern “CAC is the new rent” and “all internet companies become fintech companies”).

In 2004 a troupe of french officers in training were exploring the famous Paris Catacombs. If you aren’t aware, it’s a 4.3 mile stretch of dark caverns that sprawl under the city– housing between 6-7 million dead. Most of the catacombs are closed off to the public, because it’s so easy to get lost and never find your way out.

On this training run, the officers came across a path that said “No Public Entry”– they proceeded further and suddenly heard dogs all around them, snarling. They realized it was an advanced PA system, triggering dog noises to scare them off.

Going further, they found 3000 square feet of galleries, a bar, a lounge, and most famously: a movie theater. Seats were carved out of the limestone like an amphitheater. The place was also mysteriously professionally wired up– professional electricity and phone lines.

The officers left, and decided they’d see where the power and telephone was coming from. They returned three days later with professionals, only to find all power and phone lines cut. The only thing left behind was a note saying “Do not look for us.”

We now know this was the work of an underground society called Les UX. They’re also famous for breaking into the Pantheon Clock and secretly repairing it with the help of a master clockmaker. They announced this at a pantheon meeting one day in front of the caretaker, who promptly called police.

The Merits of Bottoms Up Investing

Testing out a few audio versions of things I’ve written. Would love feedback on whether this format is useful (even if you hate it!)

How Hip-Hop Royalty Found a New Home on Instagram Live

What’s unfolded in the weeks since is a wholesale reshuffling of the nature of celebrity. Without the usual systems of amplification and distribution, the very tools of fame are changing — benevolent magnanimity is out, relatability is in; polish is out, transparency is in.

Unsurprisingly, hip-hop has led the way.
